BiP Solutions delivers for the Ministry of Defence

1 April 2010

BiP Solutions Ltd (BiP) – the leading provider of cutting-edge solutions and services that help optimise supply chain value – has successfully delivered the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD)’s flagship Defence Research 2010 event on behalf of the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl). Defence Research 2010 focused on all defence spend within the areas of science and technology – an important area for the MOD, industry and academia.

The event was held at the International Convention Centre in Birmingham on 23 and 24 March, with a record 1600 delegates and 90 exhibitors in attendance.

The event was used to announce that the Defence Technology and Innovation Centre (DTIC) and its research programme are to move over to become part of a new Programme Office within Dstl. The move will take place in early April 2010, with the aim of creating a more streamlined and efficient Defence Science and Technology organisation.

Defence Research 2010 will be the only event this year where the MOD presents the whole of its £400m annual research investment to industry, the broader supply chain and academia. Delegates representing Prime and sub-contractors to SMEs, academia and research organisations attended, making it a valuable opportunity for  networking and engagement between the MOD and the entire defence research community.

The event was seen as important by the MOD in its ongoing search for innovative solutions and suppliers, which allow it to remain on the cutting edge of defence technology.  Representatives from Dstl, Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) and the Centre for Defence Enterprise were in attendance.

The event featured a wealth of expert speakers, including Helen Almey, Head, Centre for Defence Enterprise; Major General Alan Macklin, Director, Programmes and Technology Group (PTG), DE&S; and Dr Frances Saunders, Chief Executive of Dstl.

Gavin Copeland, Defence, Science and Technology Communications, Ministry of Defence, said: “Defence Research 2010 was a hugely successful event and demonstrates the MOD's ongoing commitment to wide supplier engagement. The 2010 event was a significant advance on the previous year, and we hope to continue this level of engagement in the future as we move forward under our new organisation."

BiP Solutions Sales and Marketing Director Simon Burges said: “We recognise the importance of Defence Research 2010 to the Defence Science and Technology community and we worked very closely with our client to ensure the event was a success. With record numbers of delegates and exhibitors in attendance, we are delighted that the exhibition and conference was a valuable experience for everyone involved and we now look forward to working with the MOD on future events.”

BiP Solutions – the publisher of the MOD’s Defence Contracts Bulletin magazine – optimises supply chain value by building knowledge and capacity across supply communities. In addition to Defence Research, BiP’s events management service organises a wide range of client events including the Scottish Government National Public Procurement Conference, Annual Conferences for the Society of Procurement Officers in Local Government, Health Care Supply Association, London Contracts and Supplies Group and the Central Buying Consortium, as well as procurement training workshops.
