B2net Scotland reduces server sprawl by 93 per cent in under 12 weeks for leading public sector information provider, BiP Solutions

August 27 2009

Rapid consolidation of 106 servers down to seven and the delivery of a robust Disaster Recovery programme enables BiP to move to its new HQ on schedule

Chesterfield – xx August/September 2009 , B2net, a vendor-independent storage integrator, today announced that it has reduced server sprawl and implemented a disaster recovery (DR) programme for BiP Solutions in just 12 weeks to support BiP’s relocation to new offices in Glasgow. BiP Solutions is a leading supply chain solutions provider, offering suppliers and buyers access to one of the world’s largest databases of current open contract opportunities.

The contract was secured by /B2net Scotland [delete], which has seen 500 per cent growth since opening a year ago following significant successes in the public sector, professional services and transport industries. B2net Scotland has an aggressive growth strategy for the region, expecting to create a number of new highly skilled positions in the next financial year.

With 260 employees and over 500 UK government organisations using BiP’s internet solutions to create and manage their contract information, it was essential that the company be able to move offices with minimal disruption to staff and customers. An extremely tight deadline of just 12 weeks and the added complication of having to consolidate a variety of operating systems and other bespoke applications in use to significantly reduce the environmental impact on its new facility, meant that BiP needed a systems integrator capable of meeting these challenging requirements.

B2net was chosen to deliver a server consolidation programme using NetApp and VMware technologies that not only provided a greener and cleaner IT infrastructure, but also reduced BiP’s server sprawl. There were some external industry concerns that B2net would not be able to meet such tight timescales, but the team worked closely with BiP’s IT staff to migrate, test and deploy the new virtual environment in under 12 weeks, thereby enabling the company to move offices in a single day.

Grant Smith, Head of IT at BiP Solutions, comments: “B2net defied the odds to deliver on an extremely challenging brief with little impact to the business and within a tight timeframe. In fact, B2net was recognised by Scottish Enterprise for its successful project delivery. BiP now benefits from having a simplified, cost-effective, secure and highly flexible IT environment that is cleaner and easier to use – that would not have been possible without B2net’s expertise.”

B2net consolidated the servers down to seven VMware ESX hosts, including storage-based replication, to provide a robust DR platform. As a result of the implementation, the DR site, which is remote from BiP’s new Glasgow HQ, now has a continuously updated copy of the primary site data, and virtual machines are ready to be utilised at a moments notice in the event of any unplanned service outage.

In order to help BiP IT staff with the transition to the new technology and to reduce as much risk as possible going forward, B2net is supplying BiP with a 12 month Managed Service programme providing end-to-end support and a single point of ownership for the entire consolidation server solution and the DR programme.

Smith adds, “B2net’s Managed Service offering has freed up our IT staff’s time to enable them to really focus on adding extra value back to the business. What has been an unexpected benefit of the implementation, however, is the fact that any deployment of new servers and services can now be completed in minutes and hours rather than days and weeks.”

“For such an ambitious project, B2net had to rely on its vast experience and expertise in deploying server virtualisation and storage consolidation projects across the UK. We therefore utilised our highly experienced IT project managers right from the start to ensure that all project elements were controlled, and that all risks were mitigated with appropriate contingency plans. With over 700 successful completed projects to date, B2net has developed an industry-leading approach and methodology for delivering challenging projects on time and within budget. We are delighted that we are continuing to make a significant and positive difference to BiP’s IT operation,” comments Bob Dalgleish, Sales Manager B2net - Scotland
